The Training Team
Ian Harvey has over 40 years experience playing in Brass Bands and 20 leading training and youth bands at all levels. Still a keen player, Ian plays baritone horn with Boxted Methodist Silver Band and euphonium with Suffolk Phoenix, Ipswich Community Wind Band and Mid Suffolk Brass.
Along with his wife, Nina, Ian identified a massive gap in the market for a much sought after youth brass band in Suffolk and, backed by a committed group of parents, set about establishing Simply Brass Stowmarket.
Nina has herself over 40 years musical experience as a piano, flute, guitar and, more recently, cornet player. Although now retired, Nina spent the last few years of her working life as a peripatetic brass teacher at the Primary school in Stowupland. Nina currently plays flugel for Mid Suffolk Brass and first trumpet/cornet in the Ipswich Community Wind Band
Sam Dean a more recent welcome addition to the training team at Simply Brass and brings not only her musical experience but also her strengths as a teacher. This has been important as our numbers have increased as each and every child needs to be valued, encouraged and supported. Sam is primarily a woodwind player and currently is solo clarinet in the Ipswich Community Wind Band. She is learning brass along with the children and now plays the tenor horn for Mid Suffolk Brass.
The most recent addition to the team is the parent of another of our members and experienced brass musician, Claire Jones. Claire is a long-time cornet player and has more recently moved on to trombone, meaning we now cover another section of the band with an ‘expert’. Claire also brings her vast experience as a teacher at Suffolk One to further ensure our members are looked after as they deserve to be.
Simply Brass is able to offer the complete package for young brass musicians in Suffolk. We cater for the complete beginner through to those who are further on in their musical career.
With this strong team at the helm Simply Brass Stowmarket is set for an exciting and successful future, bringing the unique opportunity for children in Suffolk to play in an independent Youth Brass Band.
