In September 2014 a number of musicians got together with parents of children looking to set up a musical organisation focused on helping young people experience the joy of music making as part of a team – Simply Brass Stowmarket was the result.
The idea behind the group is to provide a safe, fun environment in which children of all abilities and background come together to make music at an affordable cost. We have been fortunate enough to get backing from local people, the town and county councils, as well as other local brass bands, and have grown from an initial membership of 13 to 35.
As well as making sure everyone has fun we also look to improve through learning. Some of our members have already attended a workshop with Richard Marshall, the Principal Cornet Player of the world famous Black Dyke Mills Band. We were also lucky enough to have a second workshop and concert with Andrew Bannister of The Grimethorpe Colliery Band in October. That’s two fantastic events with two of the best cornet players in the world our members will have been lucky enough to take part in!
In 2017 we were awarded the Stowmarket Town Mayor’s Award for Excellence, cementing our place at the heart of the Stowmarket community. Continuing to expand our experiences, in March 2020 we were very fortunate to be one of the first independent youth groups to be included as part of the Schools Celebration 2020 event at Snape Maltings – we proudly opened the last night performance with a very lively set of popular music.
We’re naturally very proud and looking to build on our successes. The band is keen to play at events in the local community – if you’d like to book us please contact us via the Get in Touch page. If you’re interested in starting to learn a brass instrument, or you already play and want to join a young, friendly and fun organisation the contact details are the same – Simple!
